This week, Proximity Institute recognizes Dr. Gary Newton for his dedicated service as Board Chair since 2023.  

“When I stepped into the role of Board Chair, Proximity was just finding its footing. Since then, it has matured from a new entity to a known leadership development powerhouse,” says Dr. Newton.  

Dr. Newton, President and CEO of Sinai Health, began his term as Proximity Board Chair in September 2023 for a two-year appointment that was extended by one year to provide continuity through the organization’s most recent CEO leadership transition. During his tenure, Proximity pursued and culminated its 2022–2026 strategic plan, welcomed Susan Brown as President and CEO, evolved its purpose to deepen and broaden its commitment to hospital CEO leadership, and initiated its next strategic planning cycle.  

“Dr. Newton helped guide Proximity through a period of significant growth and transition. His commitment to strong governance, leadership development, and Ontario’s healthcare system has left a lasting impact, and we are deeply grateful for his leadership and contributions,” says Susan.  

“I am both proud of and excited for Proximity,” says Dr. Newton. “Hospital CEOs are a unique asset to the system, and there is so much opportunity for Proximity to advance their leadership in all four corners of the province.”
